Fakultas Psikologi UBAYA Akan Mengadakan Acara Kuliah Umum dan Workshop ‘EXPLORING MUSIC THERAPY IN HEALTHCARE’

“If music be the food of love, play on!” (William Shakespeare)

What is music therapy?

Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals of all ages.

Music therapy improves the quality of life for persons who are well and meets the needs of children and adults with disabilities or illnesses. Music therapy interventions can be designed to:

  • promote wellness
  • manage stress
  • alleviate pain
  • express feelings
  • enhance memory
  • improve communication
  • promote physical rehabilitation.

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.
(American Music Therapy Association definition, 2005)

Music therapists work with a broad spectrum of client populations including psychiatric patients, the developmentally disabled, the blind, the deaf, the orthopaedically handicapped, the chemically dependent, autistic children, the geriatric population, prison inmates and others.

‘I regard music therapy as a tool of great power in many neurological disorders — Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s — because of its unique capacity to organize or reorganize cerebral function when it has been damaged.’ (Oliver Sacks, M.D., Neurologist, “Awakenings”)

“Music therapy is very helpful in a prison setting with psychiatric patients. These patients often have had no life experiences with music and positive emotions or with bodily movement related to music. The patients find themselves responding to music therapy when they cannot cooperate with conventional therapy.” (Joy Prelznik, Asst. Deputy Warden, Ionia Temporary Correctional Facility, Michigan)

“Music therapy has helped my son to increase his concentration and attending. His eye contact has increased since participating in music therapy.” (The father of a 5 year old diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)

TARGET AUDIENCE
Public lecture : University of Surabaya community workshop participants*.
Workshop : Psychologists, psychiatrists, healthcare professionals and musicians who are interested to learn more about the topics.
