Politeknik Universitas Surabaya sent its lecturer to an International Conference on Applied Linguistics II

An international conference on applied linguistics with its theme “The Role of Information and Communication Technologies in Language Studies, Language Education and Language Use” was held by Indonesia University of Education, from 3- 4 August 2009 in Bandung. This conference was attended by almost 200 participants and 70 presenters. All of them came from different places of Indonesia such as Pelita Harapan University (UPH) Jakarta, State University of Semarang, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Bina Nusantara University, State University of Jogjakarta, State University of Makassar, IT Telkom Bandung, Atmajaya University, Andalas University Padang, and many others from all over Indonesia. The conference was also attended by universities from outside Indonesia such as Brunei Darussalam, Australia, UK, and Malaysia.

In order to be able to present papers at the conference, a tight selection among papers submitted was done by the committee. Of approximately 130 papers, only 70 papers were accepted. One of the papers selected belonged to one of Politeknik Ubaya lecturers, Yerly A. Datu (currently as the Head of Business English Study Program and Secretary Study Program). He presented his paper entitled “The Potentials of Youtube for Enhancing Language Learning among Business English Students of Politeknik Ubaya”. His paper discussed his research on the use of Youtube, its features which appealed to students, and some cautions in using it. His research was started by a fact showing students’ learning style-audio and visual learning style as well as a concern of how to reduce students’ boredom in learning English based on their learning style. Through this conference, the existence of Politeknik Ubaya more spesifically its study program can be more-known by other institutions.
